ABSTRACT

The current efforts to include sex education in the school curriculum are preceded by a long history of attempts which have only sometimes been successful, as for example in Sweden. At other times, those groups which oppose the introduction of sex education succeed in having it kept out of, or removed from, the curriculum. A related strand in the development of sex education was the change in attitude to values education. Australia shares the values and attitudes of other countries based in the Judaeo-Christian ethic and consequently shares common attitudes to sex education for young people. A strong Christian and moralistic context of sex education was evident in the formation of the 'Father and Son Welfare Movement' and 'League of Youth and Honour', now the Family Life Movement (FLM). This chapter also contains the report of what sex education is currently provided in schools.
