ABSTRACT

Although we talk mainly about the five primary senses, it is helpful to

consider that there are other qualities that are also referred to as ‘senses’ –

for example, a sense of self, a sense of place, or a sense of time. All five

primary senses are part of a totality of bodily or physical senses. When we are

exploring the senses through play, we may find that children have other ideas

about their senses; but it is important for children to be able to differentiate

between their senses and their feelings. Children have different stages and

time frames in the development of feeling and senses, and one is needed in

order to develop the other.
