ABSTRACT

However, not all children acquire the consonant speech sounds in the typical order of development. For example, some children need help to say a group of speech sounds called fricatives, such as s, z, f, v. These are long speech sounds, as opposed to short speech sounds such as t and d. Children who are following the typical development path acquire short speech sounds, such as t and d, k and g, before they acquire long speech sounds such as s and f. We make long speech sounds (fricatives) by pushing air through a restricted space in our mouths.
