ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to identify a lack of non-verbal interpretational skills could easily be developed into a screening tool for pre-school children to eliminate problems in all areas of communication. It demonstrates why the assessment is so effective and explores the Not Just Talking Assessment in outline. The assessment can only be done by those people who have a professional qualification during which they have undergone assessment training, such as psychologists, specialist teachers and health professionals. The assessment is only used with children who have good expressive language skills. The main focus of the assessment is to discover whether the child is able to interpret appropriately all the necessary non-verbal information to make best sense of the verbal language he hears. The assessment will always reveal a mismatch between the child's verbal expressive skills and his non-verbal communication skills. Expressive language skills may well be functioning at his age level.
