ABSTRACT

There is a great deal of debate about how much empirically supported therapies should become the treatments of choice for specific disorders. Nonetheless, with some especially hard-to-treat disorders such as the various pervasive manifestations of anxiety, the very impressive levels of impact of these treatments suggest that these treatments may well be more effective than other treatments for these problems. This chapter describes the evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders. Nonetheless, it cannot be denied that some empirically supported treatments (ESTs) for certain problems have been proven highly effective. Probably the best example of a set of disorders for which ESTs have produced exceptional results is the domain of anxiety treatment. But when clients specifically want relief from the symptoms of anxiety, these are the treatments they should get. This means that, as responsible therapists, one need to know how to practice these techniques or be prepared to refer these clients to therapists who already do.
