ABSTRACT

There are some common group member behaviors that are disruptive to the group’s process described in Chapter 10. Also described are some possible goals for these behaviors, and suggestions for the group leader’s interventions. The beginning group leader may be especially interested in the presentation on observing effective group member behavior to know which behaviors to reinforce, and to identify the ineffective behaviors in order to guide members to becoming more effective in the group. The most problematic group member is the one described in the professional literature as deviant, and presented are some identifiers. Suggestions for managing this member and for taking care of the group when the member cannot be removed from the group are provided.
