ABSTRACT

Conflict, as discussed in Chapter 11, whether it is a simple disagreement, a clash of values, or a battle such as a battle of wills, can emerge in a group at any time. In addition, a stage of group development is characterized by conflict among group members and with the leader. It is helpful for the group and group members to identify their characteristic way of handling conflict and to learn new ways to manage and resolve these. Group leaders will also find it useful to learn to implement the variable conflict management strategies presented in the chapter that capitalize on the level of responsibility and expertise of the various group members. A conflict resolution strategy and script are described, as is a process of constructive confrontation.
