ABSTRACT

Theories provide the framework for organizing, structuring, and directing psychoeducational groups. Chapter 4’s focus and emphasis is on a presentation of some teaching and learning theories and their applications to the cognitive component, especially the dissemination of information. Group leaders are guided to an understanding of the theories of group leadership, instruction, and learning and how these can be used as evidence based practices to meet the needs of various groups and a variety of group members. In addition, the chapter describes how the cognitive component can be enhanced using styles of teaching to match learners’ styles, and provides suggestions for techniques to encourage and promote involvement and learning.
