ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 emphasizes issues and concerns relative to culture and diversity that can affect the group and its members. Major foci are on the need and rationale for group leaders’ competence for these matters, a description of training standards for two national professional organizations, the characteristics that describe culturally sensitive group leaders, and how microaggressions can impact the group and its members.

It is important that group leaders recognize the impact and influence of culture and diversity on group members. These factors and their influences can be instrumental to help understand behaviors and interactions in the group. Suggestions are provided on how to manage sensitive and potentially hurtful situations that may emerge in the group around these concerns and issues.
