ABSTRACT

Fundamental to understanding how backup and recovery fits into a data protection strategy is an understanding of the key concepts within backup and recovery. The backup environment topology refers to the layout of the servers and the clients. There are three effective topologies available today-centralized, decentralized, and hybrid. Recovery type refers to how the backup product facilitates recoveries-how files and data that have been backed up may be selected for recovery or recovered without selection. There are three types that should be considered mandatory for a backup product: last filesystem view recovery; point-in-time recovery; and nonindex recovery. The chapter discusses a few of the additional considerations associated with database backups that businesses and administrators need to take into consideration. Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) was developed to facilitate the backup of network appliances. Command line access to a backup product can be instrumental in remote support, monitoring, backup, and recovery operations. All backup systems need to provide a backup catalog.
