ABSTRACT

This chapter provides three examples of multilayered data protection approaches based on particular environments. These are in a definitive set of examples, and will provide a common baseline to the decision processes and techniques that often go into planning data protection. A common example for most businesses now is the multilayered approach required for comprehensive data protection services in virtual machine environments. Increasingly virtualization represents a significant and mixed workload/footprint within most organizations. Continuous Data Protection (CDP) systems can be used to provide application-consistent replication to another host, but can also be used for "rewind" operations against the production system being protected by CDP as well. In modern business it's practically unheard of to leverage only a single data protection strategy. A holistic data protection strategy is no longer something only 24 × 7 and multinational or global businesses require; it is essential for the modern IT environment.
