ABSTRACT

The purpose of business continuity revolves around keeping the business running, or in the event of a significant disruption, allowing the business to recommence operations. The scope of business continuity planning is beyond that of data protection systems. Business continuity concerns itself wholly with those business functions. These will inevitably vary from business to business in detail and priority, but a few common functions for many businesses might include such areas as billing, customer order fulfillment, stock control, and payroll. When evaluating risk versus cost decisions for business continuity, the business should be prepared to evaluate three potentially different approaches, namely: continuity; restoration; and triage. While such approaches might be determined on a company-wide scale, it will more usually be the case that they will be determined on a business-function-by-business-function basis and will be related directly to the criticality of the business function.
