ABSTRACT

Many businesses have now evolved to a point where either based on a worldwide presence or due to government compliance requirements they have to keep systems available continuously, and active data protection techniques can play a significant factor in ensuring such a high level of availability. Both continuous availability solutions and replication solutions (regardless of whether they are synchronous or asynchronous) usually provide a much higher and more granular form of data protection than be offered by traditional backup and recovery products. These become critical for any organization requiring very small RTOs and RPOs. Storage virtualization systems offering effective continuous data availability should not be confused with synchronous replication. While synchronous replication mirrors many of the features of continuously available virtualized storage, there is usually an assumption of an outage in the event of the primary storage target experiencing a failure.
