ABSTRACT
Given the fundamental unavailability of living-body research “test rigs” for the body's bearings, this chapter of course does not contain the engineering technology depth of the bearing types covered in Chapters 1 through 3. It is thus focused primarily on describing (1) how synovial joints function and (2) recent research and development on synovial fluid lubrication and joints, including artificial joints that are now quite common.
