ABSTRACT

This is a major chapter, beginning with a comprehensive primer on modern machinery monitoring and diagnostics (MaD), including recent related utilization research on (1) probability statics and (2) measures of deterministic chaos as diagnostics tools. Machinery MaD topics detailed include (1) machinery vibration, (2) high-energy centrifugal pumps, and (3) virtual sensors that are based on accessible-location real sensors driving in real-time calibrated simulation models to replicate machine-internal parameter time-based signals where real sensors are not feasibly locatable; for application in critical machines that are not amenable to internal positioning of real sensors, for example, nuclear power plant pumps. The application of modern MaD systems is detailed both for (1) hydrodynamic fluid-film journal and thrust bearings, and for (2) rolling element bearings, with extensive citing of references on MaD methods and products.
