ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the necessity for organizations to have and balance both purpose and execution. Execution is the industry's catalyst to fulfilling its purpose. The same principle applies to business-to-business entities. The problem most organizations face when it comes to effective execution is that individuals and teams traditionally don't know or understand how the work they do each day connects to the organization's overall purpose. Organizational execution is not done in isolation, though. It requires a concerted effort, a one-team mentality. Waldman frequently refers to his wingmen, men and women in his formation who were depending on him to get his part of the job done. Situational awareness is key to ensuring that organizations are taking the right actions and executing on the right things to fulfill their purpose. Without eyes in the back of their heads, organizations tend to spend a lot of time working on non-value-added things.
