ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the growing impetus to generate 'impact' with research activities and how to work with others outside of academia. Exploring what this may look like, the chapter considers the potential of working with other sectors through undertaking engagement activities that disseminate the research to populations. The chapter discusses in the principle that HE is no longer an ivory tower and that academia is simply another professional workforce that can, and arguably has a responsibility to, engage with other workforces to ensure fruitful sharing of knowledge, information, and ideas. One may have heard of this emphasis on real-world application and getting academic research 'out there' in terms of 'knowledge mobilisation' and 'knowledge transfer'. Such a move towards identifying, establishing and subsequently demonstrating the 'real world' impact of academia has significant ramifications throughout almost all aspects of an academic career.
