ABSTRACT

One of the greatest impacts on communication in the twenty-first century is the explosion of social media opportunities. Social media is a tremendous tool for increasing communication, particularly those pieces of information that are appropriate for mass consumption, such as short pieces of information that lots of people need to know or are interested in knowing. However, the same social media that can help build trust through fast and efficient communication can also be a huge trust buster. One important concept to remember is that social media is never private, regardless of the settings reader put on their account. Social media is also never temporary. Social media use by faculty and staff, as well as students, can also be a challenge for leaders when inappropriate or unprofessional material is posted online. As a leader, ensure that appropriate use of social media is covered in both reader employee and student handbooks.
