ABSTRACT

Empathy is the ability to understand how others might feel or react in a given situation. In simple terms, to empathize is to walk in another's shoes and to witness his struggle. Leaders demonstrating empathy give of themselves by being present for someone else. Empathy can be observed nonverbally in one's facial expressions, gestures, and body language, and verbally in the words and tone communicated. Empathy can also provide a physical sensation in the body of warmth and well-being when expressed. A teacher would show empathy by considering how slamming a finger in the door hurts, looking the child in the eye, being present, and expressing concern about his finger. She might say "That really hurts" or use nonverbal communication and hug him. Empathy is not about giving advice or trying to fix a problem. Empathy is being present and understanding how someone might be experiencing a situation.
