ABSTRACT

Being consistently visible shows that school leader cares and is a way to build trust. Being visible shows what the school leader values and demonstrates their priorities. Make a conscious effort to be visible at predictable times, when both staff and students can count on reader's presence. There is a level of comfort built in to the predictability of school leader's presence and visibility. Visibility as a trust builder is simply walking around your building and making eye contact with teachers and students on a regular basis. Some experts have called this need for leaders to be visible as "management by walking around" (MBWA). They offer the leader a chance to smile at people, to see the activities in the building, and to be a part of the daily culture and happenings of the school. Visibility in this way allows the school leader to bond with staff and students in an informal, friendly, and nonthreatening manner.
