ABSTRACT

Chapter 6, The politics of transitional justice in Nepal, examines the different ways actors engage with and mould transitional justice. I argue that actors frequently seek to advance their interests and make claims utilising the process, institutions and language of transitional justice. I also argue that there is considerable political activity taking place that challenges transitional justice on multiple levels. Accordingly, it is more useful to consider actors’ actions in relation to transitional justice on a continuum where there is adoption/compliance, contentious action and resistance with a wide range of variation within each. This chapter also critically analyses the opportunities and challenges of participation in transitional justice in Nepal.
