ABSTRACT

In trying to make sense of pregnancy loss, we may search around for possible causes. Often this can lead us back to blaming ourself. Some people fear miscarriage is a sign of punishment, revenge, ill-wishing or retribution. Other fears include that we have done something to our baby and therefore can't talk about the miscarriage in case of being blamed. Most often chromosomal abnormalities happen by chance, and will not repeat in future. But if we are older, or have previously miscarried due to suspected or known chromosomal abnormality our doctor may recommend prenatal testing or an amniocentesis. During pregnancy a number of hormones are produced and problems may occur if the body does not make enough hormones to help us get and stay pregnant. If we have polycystic ovaries, or other hormonal problems, this may increase our risk of miscarriage and affect our fertility.
