ABSTRACT

Collect together the objects. These could include a paperweight, an apple, a

ruler, a shoe, a piece of rope, a book and so on. The more varied the objects,

the better.

Have the group members sit in a circle. Place the objects in the centre on a

coffee table. Ask participants to choose an object, take it and sit down again.

Now either ask a volunteer to begin a story, or do so yourself, including in the

opening the object you have chosen. You might begin: ‘Peter went into the

park and sat down on a bench. He could feel the heat of the sun on his face

and smell the freshly cut grass. As he bit into the apple he’d brought for lunch,

a voice from behind said: “Do you mind if I join you?”’ Having started the story

and included the object in the narrative, pass the story line on to the next

person, who continues with it, including their chosen object in what they say.

The story is then passed on to the next player, who proceeds in the same

manner. This continues until everyone has had an opportunity to include their

object in the story. The last person attempts to bring the story to an end.
