ABSTRACT

Saliva loss can be seen as being anterior, when it spills from the mouth, or posterior, when it pools at the back of the mouth and is difficult to swallow. This chapter deals with anterior spillage.

Effects of saliva loss Where saliva spills from the mouth the following may occur:

l Loss of fluid – can have an impact on hydration

l Unhealthy mouth, leading to halitosis (unpleasant odour) and gum or dental problems, including ‘angular chelitis’, a thrush-like infection which leads to soreness at the corners of the mouth

Causes of saliva loss The child’s ability to control his saliva is affected by many factors.
