ABSTRACT

Objective Sometimes it is hard to assess the quality of an important relationship in your life. This being so, it can be difficult to decide whether to stay and work at the relationship or rather to leave and move on. One danger can be that of walking away from a fundamentally enriching relationship because it doesn’t match up to a fairytale, idealised image you have of how close personal relationships should be. The other danger is staying in an emotionally deadening relationship just because it is safe and comfortable. So this exercise is designed for participants to rehearse both the act of leaving an important relationship and the act of staying, in order to sharpen their thinking and feeling about the gains and losses from both forms of action.
