ABSTRACT

Greek myth Narcissus spends his time looking at his own reflection, so the narcissistically wounded person always looks to the other person to mirror them back, to listen to them, to praise them, to pay attention to their needs, without any reciprocity. The underlying belief, often unconscious, is as follows: ‘There is only one of us, the other is to mirror me.’ Narcissism leads to a basic disinterest in or lack of curiosity about the other. This syndrome is very noticeable in conversation, where the narcissistically wounded person persistently turns the conversation back to their experiences, their feelings, etc. at every opportunity. It is basically a monologue. There is no real interest in what the other person has to say.
