ABSTRACT
Perhaps you’ve heard of comedian Tig Notaro. Notaro became famous when she did a stand-up comedy routine about a harrowing few months she’d had. Her fi rst lines were, “Hello. I have cancer.” Not only had she gotten cancer, she caught a deadly bacterial infection, lost twenty-fi ve pounds, got pneumonia, had to undergo a double mastectomy, was dumped by her partner who didn’t want to deal with the cancer, and, to make matters much worse, her mom suddenly fell, hit her head, and died in a hospital. While none of this was funny, Notaro’s delivery that night on stage moved people. The comedian Louis CK happened to be in the crowd and called her stand-up performance one of the best he’d ever witnessed. It made waves throughout the Internet and made her famous.
