ABSTRACT

Teachers can have fun with the layout of the task cards; we have seen teachers arrange the cards in a "bay" while discussing marine life, or in a formation like a boat for a unit on the Civil War, or even just in a hopscotch pattern. Before students can return one task card to get another, they take their work to the teacher, who quickly reviews it and provides immediate feedback. Before giving the summative assessment, LaTanya wants to see what her students know and what they still need to work on, so two days before the assessment, she decides to do the Check In, Check Out task. After the lesson, LaTanya collects all student papers and reviews them, coming up with the following chart: The next two days before the test, LaTanya knows that she will have to work significantly with Raina and Max, and probably also quite a bit with Luis, Sam, Jackie, and Jorge.
