ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on teaching the client about how to control negative automatic thoughts. It deals with a review of the session and the setting of homework. If the client is ready to move on, then introduce the idea that this step is about starting to focus on controlling their negative thoughts and associated depression. The aim is to help the client to escape their negative thoughts, and in later steps they will learn how to challenge them. If the client is unable to implement one of the techniques they have chosen, then ask them to choose another and try again with that one. Sometimes a technique that initially seems easy for the client can in fact be difficult. It is useful for the therapist to make a note of the client's expectations as they are often lower than their actual experience in the coming week, and this can be used to demonstrate how they underestimate themselves.
