ABSTRACT

People are constantly faced with problems to solve. Most of these do not pose too much difficulty. However, individuals are occasionally faced with more difficult problems for which they cannot easily find a solution. One teach the client how to solve problems. This can be quite a slow way of doing things, but it is very effective, so the time is well spent. The client works through the following stages: problem Definition; brainstorming; rating the desirability of the solution; examining the practicality of a solution; develop strategies for decreasing hindering forces and increasing helping forces; choosing the best solution; and review the outcome of the solution. Defining the problem may seem an obvious thing to do, but often people do not see the problem clearly. It is important to ensure that the client is clear about what they are going to do and whether they have completed the task correctly.
