ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights a few US federal agencies, task forces, and others that regularly investigate and/or enforce laws which involve such wrongdoing on a frequent basis or on a large scale. In 2015, the Government Accountability Office reported that the Department of Defense obligates more than $300 billion annually on contracts for goods and services, including major weapon systems, etc. Since the passing of the Office of Inspector General Act in 1978, over 70 federal OIGs have been created that investigate fraud, waste, and abuse involving their own agencies. The US military's own branches also have special agents that investigate fraud, waste, and abuse as well as other criminal offenses. The FBI works public corruption cases and often works jointly with other agencies investigating contract and procurement fraud and/or collusion. The Department of Justice has formed task forces so that investigative agencies can share information and work together to investigate contract and procurement fraud, collusion, and corruption, nationally and internationally.
