ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the benefits of encouraging clients to become aware of their own affirmations and consciously creating their affirmations to help them achieve what they want in therapy. Affirmations are anything we say or think – they are our thoughts and our beliefs. Those affirmations are unlikely to make us feel good and optimistic and ready to embrace life's challenges. The purpose of affirmations is to create conscious thoughts that help us, so that our life is not dominated, dictated and determined by affirmations that prevent us from living the life we want, enjoying inner peace, enjoying our experience of life and achieving our goals. Affirmations used in the way intended here focus on the present and in particular our attitude and our approach to it. Negative affirmations typically overpower positive ones "because there are more of them and they're usually said with great feeling".
