ABSTRACT

However, it is also important for students to know that it is OK when things change or are unexpected. Teach them strategies for coping with these things. Too much emphasis on strict routines could lead to it being more difficult to cope when inevitable changes do occur.

Lots of students on the autism spectrum prefer well-structured lessons. Explain a plan of the lesson at the beginning so that students know what to expect and in what order. Encourage students to use task boards or ‘to-do lists’ in which they can tick off the completed activities. Provide extension tasks or extra activities (eg reading) so that students always have something to do.
