ABSTRACT
Introduction There are literally thousands of words to learn which means that they cannot all be taught, no matter how much time is devoted to vocabulary teaching. If children are going to learn at the required rate, they need to learn words independently. Therefore, the aim is to build on their innate word-learning skills by ensuring that they are aware of words, interested in words and become autonomous ‘word detectives’.
