ABSTRACT
Introduction A child’s understanding of a curriculum area and his vocabulary are intertwined. For instance, if a child is learning about mini-beasts but does not know the word insect, his ability to both fully understand that particular curriculum area and express his knowledge is severely limited. Vocabulary is also particularly closely related to conceptual understanding and, specifically, teaching verbal concepts will develop children’s language, curriculum access and understanding of the world.
