ABSTRACT

Under the guidance of leader Sally N’Dongo, the Union générale des travailleurs sénégalais en France (General Union of Senegalese Workers in France or UGTSF) became one of the most active immigrant groups of any nationality in France during the early postcolonial era. The group’s multifaceted approach to social welfare and political activism make it a compelling subject for understanding the challenges faced by African immigrants after decolonization, especially poor living and working conditions, and their responses through political activism. Evaluating the UGTSF’s politicization in turn aids in recovering the African immigrant community’s early postcolonial history, its voice, and its experiences.
