ABSTRACT

Discussion: Why did Marvin get mad? Look at Marvin’s face when he said ‘I wanted that apple!’ How can you tell he is mad? What is another word for ‘mad’? Marvin shouts a lot – why? Look at the page where there are four pictures: he stamped on the flowers, knocked over the chicken shed, frightened the ducks, bit a cow’s tail. Take each one and ask the children to consider what the consequences are. Try to get them away from ‘He’ll get told off’; rather, encourage them to think what happens to the chicken shed when it is knocked over and what happens to the chickens. Was it their fault? What is the eventual consequence for Marvin when he stamps on the ground? How does he get calm? What do you think might happen next at the end of the story? Do you think Marvin might have learned his lesson and change his behaviour?
