ABSTRACT

Developing children’s vocabulary is undoubtedly a big task. Like other changes in schools, implementing Word Aware will be challenging at times and so careful planning is essential.

As stated in chapter 1, to really make an impact on children’s vocabulary a sustained whole school approach is required. In our experience the most successful early implementer schools have had strong leadership from senior managers and a group of vocabulary enthusiasts. Training, modelling, resources and sharing good practice have all been instrumental in getting the approach going and keeping it running.
