ABSTRACT
To be a successful word learner, children need to have a range of strategies that they can apply independently to work out the meanings of words. This process needs to be introduced and added to over a period of several years as children become developmentally ready for each stage. The process starts with children identifying words they do not know, but over time they can be introduced to more strategies until finally collating it into the complete process described towards the end of this chapter.
