ABSTRACT

Measuring progress can be approached in a number of different ways and the method will depend on your purpose. Formal assessments such as the British Picture Vocabulary Scale (Dunn et al, 1997) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (Dunn & Dunn, 2007) will provide information about students’ general understanding of vocabulary, but they will provide little information about students’ knowledge of topic-specific vocabulary or direct you to which words to teach. Formal assessments such as these will also be time consuming to administer and hard to sustain on an ongoing basis, but can be useful for more in-depth investigations.
