ABSTRACT

The following programme is based on the amalgamation of two practices that naturally complement and influence each other: Communication and Drama. Drama enables us to explore stories/situations and language in a creative environment and puts learning and language into a purposeful and meaningful context – vitally important for children. We are surrounded by stories throughout our lives. They inspire us, entertain us and enhance our understanding of the world. Our need for stories shows how we need to understand patterns of life, and, as Bruner (1996) has stated, we live our lives and shape our identities through stories. Stories are the way to reach out to children and emotionally connect, and experiencing and exploring stories with scaffolding will enable children to embed the learning of language and communication skills more effectively. The session plans within this programme provide fun and accessible sessions, focusing on building language and communication skills around topics and stories that children are covering within their curriculum.
