ABSTRACT

Communication is the sharing of a message between two people. Only 7" of human communication is verbal. Intentional communication is where the sender of the message consciously sends it to another person. Language is a formalised system of communicating. Each language has a set of rules about word order that cannot be broken. This is syntax or grammar. There are languages consisting of manual signs, not spoken words, as in British Sign Language (BSL). Multi-modal communication encompasses all of these modes of communication: non-verbal communication, spoken language, and signs and symbols. Empathic interaction is the sense that another person really gets one. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is any form of language or communication that is used to augment, or supplement, spoken language, or is used as an alternative to spoken language. Assistive technology (AT) is any piece of equipment that has been made or modified to improve the functional capabilities of an individual with a disability.
