ABSTRACT

The Code of Practice sets out a graduated response to a child or young person not making expected educational progress. Where progress for an individual is less than expected, then teaching staff need to work with their Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to assess whether a child/young person (CYP) has an SEN, and what interventions may be put in place. Many children with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) will have interventions in school and from specialists without needing an EHCP. There is no set threshold whereby assessment for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) can be instigated for a child. If a child uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), then it needs to be specified in EHCP. Targets may be set by NHS services working with adult AAC users. Some targets have elements of more than one area of competency, but will be worded to stress linguistic, social, operational or strategic aspect.
