ABSTRACT

Without the need for a hostile or aggressive approach by the counsellor, Reality Therapy's questioning style and its adherence to personal responsibility can provide a very necessary focus on the client's behaviours and, in the first instance, help them to curtail their drinking or other addictive behaviours. The delivery system of Reality Therapy is one that is readily applicable to the processes and approaches used in the vast majority of treatment programmes. With regards to research studies in the field of addictions, Reality Therapy has been reported to be an effective and successful counselling approach in several studies; notably those by Chance and by Honeyman. The overview that will be provided in this chapter of a Choice Theory understanding of addiction and the Reality Therapy approach to counselling in addictions treatment is written primarily for the benefit of those already working in the addictions field and for those contemplating doing so in the future of course, for general interest.
