ABSTRACT

Tailoring communication methods People with learning disabilities communicate using diverse communication methods. The way a person communicates is as individual as the person themselves, drawing from a wide range of methods which may include speech, gestures, symbols and signs. These methods may be conventional in that they are recognisable and transferrable, ie words used in the conventional sense with conventional meanings, or signs from British Sign Language or Makaton. Communication methods may also be unconventional or individualised: for example, words or phrases that differ from their literal meaning or signs which are simplified or created by the individual.
