ABSTRACT

Using pictures and symbols can enhance the opportunities to communicate with

people, provided they have achieved this level of symbol development (see the section

‘Enabling effective communication’). Using pictures and symbols can support people

to communicate with others, access information, record information, be creative, make

choices, follow instructions, anticipate what is about to happen, understand processes

and routines, and become more involved. Using pictures and symbols can also support

the development of social skills as people learn to approach and interact with other

people and, as a result, interactions have more meaning.
