ABSTRACT

The student goes into a local shop such as a newsagents or corner shop to request an item from behind the counter. The student asks for the price, buys the item, requests a receipt and a bag and leaves the shop with their purchase. The student may have to use a range of strategies to sort out any communication problems. Student's role play to learn and practise the skills they need for the particular communication task as usual, while keeping the skill relating to using strategies to resolve confusion (HoCS) fairly simple. This SmiLE Therapy module is for secondary-aged students and young adults who can make a request independently in a shop. The skills included in the Communication Skills Checklist (CSC) for this module are shown in the checklist. People will find a full-page version of the CSC for deaf students and one for hearing students.
