ABSTRACT

Planning for smiLE Therapy at the mainstream primary school with a special educational needs resource base happened in record time. The speech and language therapist, Janet recognised a great opportunity to introduce smiLE Therapy to this school as part of their special 'Integration Week'. Jim liked what he heard about smiLE Therapy at that initial meeting, and the before/after therapy outcomes the authors showed him on video. Since the three students not present had already been filmed, Janet and Claire were able to include them in a smiLE Therapy group. The role that Pam played in providing the supported generalisation for Amy, frequently in school over school five months, had taught Amy additional communication skills beyond the actual therapy itself, and given her even more confidence. Amy's special needs assistant (SNA), Pam, who had joined every smiLE Therapy session, took the initiative and supported Amy in generalising her use of eye contact, smiles and 'hellos' throughout the school day.
