ABSTRACT

The Communication Skills Checklist (CSC) is the visual representation of all the skills needed in a particular task. The process of eliciting the CSC described here uses Module 2 Entering and leaving an office as an example. Each module in Part 3 has a 'ready-to-go' CSC. However, the CSC is specific to the particular needs of each student group and therefore may require additions, depending on what students demonstrated in the initial filming. To maintain the level of frequent repetition of step progression, you may recap the first five skills from the whole student group using the finger strategy. Symbols serve as a quick visual reminder of the necessary skills for students with good literacy skills. The use of symbols is a way for the student to learn new communication skills without literacy being a barrier. Symbols can be introduced once the skills have been elicited.
