ABSTRACT

Unhappiness at school may also be caused by the attempts of pupils to cope with work which is above their level of intelligence, and this factor is much more prominent in the replies from girls in co-educational schools than in those from girls in girls' schools. In support of this it was shown that the intelligence scores of the co-educated unhappy girls were distributed lower in the scale than those of the unhappy girls in girls' schools. The average intelligence score of the entire sample of co-educated girls was lower than that of their opposing group. In the Schools project neither type of school had a large group of these pupils, and the difference between the schools in this respect was small. This chapter provides the case-studies of unhappy pupils. The amount of unhappiness at home compared with that at school being statistically highly significant.
